    I learned that Common Nighthawks do a distraction display just like Killdeer and some other birds do.  I was walking on a dry, gravelly area and apparently unwittingly got close to a nest on the ground.  

    The adult comes off the ground and starts flopping one wing and making short hops/flights ahead of me--really a very good act.  I honestly thought this bird was injured before I realized what was happening.  

    I didn't stick around to see how far it would lead me before flying back to its nest...I just got out of there to avoid disturbing it any more.
