  •  I went through pretty much the same (8+ / 0-)

business with my dad.  I kept on smoking (mostly against my  will because I could not quit) until I was noticeably sucking wind walking up hill and cigarettes hit >$7.00/pack and I was unemployed.
My dad recovered from all of the cardio stuff only to get hit with a rare auto-immune disease which killed him in about 5 years.
Losing your dad really sucks, I know.  I miss that guy every day.
    My sympathies or empathies.

the smoking.  Some was terrible genes.  His non-smoking brother died at the age of 42 (two years younger than I am now) of a massive heart attack.  That was about a year before angioplasty became common and long before statin inhibitors were on the market.

Of course, his older brother was severely overweight, ate everything in sight, and lived to be 80.

My cholesterol started to spike in my thirties (my doctor is the same one who took care of my father so we were keeping a very close eye on it).  Lipitor and diet (mostly the Lipitor) control me very well...but doc has said that I'm genetically screwed.

      •  I have a fairly good ones except.... (8+ / 0-)

my dad used to say you can't kill them "in-laws" with a stick.  My maternal Grandmother died at 103, her brother died at 97-98, her sister the same and her other brother smoked Camel straights and died from emphysema in the late 70's.

Weird genetics can pop up though and it is an issue for me.  I may or may not discuss this some day here.  Funny thing, it has nothing to due with smoking, drinking or environmental exposure.
