  •  I will freely admit there was a time when (18+ / 0-)

ANY male getting on an elevator with me caused me to be doubly alert. This may well account for why I am one of every two women in America who has not been sexually assaulted or raped. Though I did get thrown upside a squad car by a cop one time for telling him he was out of line. But, that was long ago. For some time now I have been too old to attract much attention. At least, I thought so until that 90 year old got arrested in Wisconsin.

Still, I am increasingly of the opinion that the bullies attack wherever and whenever they think they can get away with it. And, after predicting wrongly for fifty years that the urban hordes are going to rise up in revenge, the bullies are clearly convinced that African Americans and old women are fair game. Why else would New York cops arrest and grope a half a million pedestrians a year, if they didn't think they could get away with it?
It's abuse, plain and simple. And the thing about abuse, in addition to being passed from generation to generation, is that the abused are not in a position to resist without risking worse. Which is why there has to be an intervention and, if authority stands silent in its face, it becomes complicit.

The President speaking out showed them up. Bloomberg sending others to do his dirty work really ought to be ashamed.

If women could just get it together to clutch their purses in an elevator, men would stop sexually assaulting them? You need read your statistics more closely.

Roughly 2/3rds of assaults are committed by men known to victims. Of those men, they are a small percentage of men who are able to repeat their crimes over and over, probably at least in part because of the kind of victim blaming seen in this comment.
