I am a long time Kiva supporter and will probably still work with them despite this. Not that I don't consider it important, but I think most of their work is great and it is rare to see an organization that helps both Israelis and Palestinians side by side. Like any successful organization, they will make decisions that I don't like. This diary does further a decision I recently made to shift some of my microlending to another organization I like...so here are two alternatives to Kiva I recommend:

    Microplace:
    https://www.microplace.com/
Has loans all over the world (my favorites are the loans to small farmers in Ecuador to set up sustainable farming practices) through organizations that are generally seen to be liberal (e.g. Calvert, WCCN...). Some loans give you a small amount of interest and you can choose where, how long and how much interest (up to about 3%) you want in a loan you make.

    Vittana:
    http://www.vittana.org/
Provides student loans all over the world in areas from teaching to nursing to engineering to law...etc. I don't know if it makes some of the same compromises this diary shows Kiva does, but as far as I know they don't.
