    the conditions ripping the region apart are already in motion, at the moment, although they are by no means inexorable. the single ethnicity/sectarian nation-state is going to be a huge mess in that region. either pluralist states based on some common ground emerge, or things will get exceedingly ugly.

    the good news is that there are historical precedents in that region for such sorts of coexistence, so it's not as if the current crisis is the only way things can turn out. the problem is that wars, especially civil wars, create their own momentum and entrench divisions in ways that can be hard to reverse.
