    I have three shelves of books on rock, but Lester Bangs is sui generis. Except for all the fools who try to write like Lester Bangs.

      there's a bit he wrote in 1971 that's even funnier now. He's talking about the members of Count Five who stopped touring to go back to school....

      That's a certain claim to distinction--imagine Mick Jagger suddenly tripped by an attack of remorse, and right in the middle of a glug of champagne at some jet-set hot spot the ineluctable truth hits him: You've got to get an education, boy. You may have millions, but do you think you'll be a popstar all your life?
      Bangs is so exuberant, even when he's cynical about the pretentiousness of rock, he's somehow exuberantly cynical.
