  •  I am one of those for whom diet/exercise (5+ / 0-)

doesn't work well to lower cholesterol.

Many years ago, I went through the Pritikin program for cholesterol reduction. Extremely strict diet, weekly weigh-ins and exercise program and counseling about dietary habits. I wasn't extremely overweight, and I dropped about 5 pounds during that month.

At the end of the month, my cholesterol had dropped about 10 points. Others in the program had theirs drop by 30-70 points.

Pritikin's program included less than 10% fat (meat, oils, etc.), mostly raw fruits and veggies and low starches.

Without statins, my cholesterol was almost 300 points. With statins, I have been able to get it down to 183. I hate taking pills once a day, but better than having issues with high cholesterol.

I rarely eat meat, I don't put a lot of oil on anything and I eat raw veggies every day. Without statins, my cholesterol (and triglycerides) would be far worse than they are right now.

    •  Yep. Statins save lives, but they're not a panacea (1+ / 0-)

      i dunno

They often end up being used to try pushing against a terrible diet and totally sedentary lifestyle, with more success than we deserve. But they are intensely marketed and pushed and sold using all the tools at the disposal of the 'Pharmaceutical-industrial complex', even when dietary changes and lifestyle modification would be a lot more sensible as a first step.

I just loved one of the "Dilbert" cartoons, wherein the pointy-haired boss sends Wally to the doctor in his place because he can't be bothered to go. He sends Wally off with instructions: "And don't let him sweet-talk you into that diet and exercise crap. I want pills".
