  •  Would you pay $1.50 monthly to access the library? (1+ / 0-)

This is a library service for the benficiaries. I don't think we want to go down this path. Its further commoditization of access to a public service. Its a dangerous precedent to threaten literacy for the disadvantaged.

Your argument is one that could be used to end the public library system.  "Why should I pay for your library books?"

You pay for the library and  materials with taxes whether you use it or not. Its the same for this service.

We have a collective responsibility for each other. My point is that assuring access to information for all preserves democracy.

Jesus man, do the math.  The value of the books, movies and music I have borrowed from the library is worth orders of magnitude more than $1.50/month.

$1.50 is the rental cost of ONE DVD from Redbox, for one day.

I can go to the library and rent a dozen DVDs and keep them a week.  Then repeat the next week, and the next.

Do you know how many books I've read from my library?  Hundreds.

$1.50/month is a steal and people shouldn't whine about that cost.

My comment was meant to illustrate that I as a sighted person can access the library for free. I was trying to point out that we should not impose an additional individual cost on the patrons....

IOW it is a shared responsibility....
