You know, I keep seeing this stat, and I'm not sure where it comes from.  When my wife and I moved to the Philly area a few years ago, she researched teaching jobs both in Philly and in the surrounding suburbs in Delaware and Montgomery County.  Without exception, the suburban jobs paid about $5000-$10,000 LESS than the equivalent Philly jobs.

Is that stat comparing Philly to the surrounding NJ suburbs?  That could explain it, since each state has such different pay scales for teachers.

It's entirely possible that the average salaries are higher outside Philadelphia while the starting-to-middle salaries are lower, if teachers burn out and leave earlier in Philadelphia.  Those $110K salaries for 40-year teachers in districts like Central Bucks could easily skew things.  And that's before you even get into the question of the comparison group (just MontCo, vs. all neighboring counties in PA, vs. adding DE and southern NJ too).

I went to junior high and high school in Bucks County, and my school district had the highest paid teachers in the state--definitely higher than Philly's. That was Council Rock. I'd assume teachers in Pennsbury, Central Bucks, and New Hope-Solebury are paid well, too.
