    It has been pointed out elsewhere in these comments that sir or ma'am are often used to address someone when you don't know their name.  If possible in that situation I don't use any term at all but in some cases, as when you need to attract someone's attention, I find myself having to use sir or ma'am simply because the only alternative would be 'Hey You' which is generally considered impolite.

    I think some new term could be substituted that doesn't have the formality and classist origins of sir and ma'am.  Maybe just human.

    "Excuse me Mr. Human but you dropped this on street."

    "I beg your pardon, good human but your coat is on fire"

    "Thank you very much for your information on Republican health care proposals fellow human, but I'm afraid I will not be supporting them."

    "Puny human, Hulk smash!"

    OK maybe not the last one.
