But I get turned off by people who clearly want to make a name for themselves.  There are certain people who have become front pagers that I do not read because they are so full of themselves.

I come here for good discussions and interesting viewpoints ... lots of times I read about breaking news here, most of the time I don't comment but I rec or ignore. So, I really don't care if you have 100s of followers, I care about what you contribute to the conversation. I find many of the folks here are well informed thinkers with good writing skills whose view points I value (even if I disagree with them) but I rarely list myself as a follower. My suggestion is that you contribute regularly and intelligently and honestly  ... and my hope this that you not treat this as popularity contest (like all the "friends" on face book) or a way to get a paying position.

I will not follow but I might read.

i'm with you on everything you said. excellent advice.

i'm actually kind of surprised people would put energy into trying to build a list of followers. daily kos really is different, isn't it?
