People in the U.S. just don't comprehend this, but Europe was deeply and profoundly traumatized by the unbelievable carnage and destruction of WWII. Just to spell it out, most European cities were heavily damaged by aerial bombing, artillery, and brutal ground combat. Some were virtually destroyed. Not even mentioning the Holocaust, WWII was a horrendous catastrophe for Europe's civilians. The memory of this is so traumatic that ongoing and well-documented civilian massacres in their own Balkan backyard was not enough to overcome European revulsion at military action.

So European forces will never, ever intervene with ground troops in Syria. They understand far too well what that really means. Lots of dead people and lots of destroyed homes.

    •  Tragically, I think Euros DON'T remember WWII. (0+ / 0-)

Remember the Balkan War? Srebrenica? It only stopped when the USA finally hit the Serbs with air strikes. Under the banner of NATO, yes, but it was mostly US pilots and US planes. The European powers would've let a whole cascade of Srebrenicas happen.

And it's quite an irony that the European Union was originally supposed to contain Germany; but it's turned out that using the mechanisms of the European Union, Germany has managed to subjugate much of Europe more securely than it could ever manage with the German Army. Ask the unemployed Greeks, Irish, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italians how well the EU is containing German hubris.

Germany is an economic power, they worked hard, and with that comes power (just like the US throws it's weight around). The other counties are economic basket cases due mostly because of bad domestic policies, such as having a retirement age of 55. What I remember about wwII is how late the US showed up.
