penalty for many years. A life without parole sentence is an actual life sentence. And who knows - there is always the chance for remorse, repentance and an attempt to live a new life. Some lifers have turned their lives around and committed time to teaching, for example.

There is no death sentence, not even for killing a policeman.

For me, the death penalty is too much like the parent who smacks their child for hitting their brother.

    •  I am a death penalty opponent.... (3+ / 0-)

But I generally consider rehabilitation, or as you put it: Remorse, repentance and a new life, to be an opportunity afforded to those who commit non-violent offenses, or violent offenders who were perhaps caught up in the heat of passion or a life of gangbanging or screwed up youth.

For someone like Hasan, a grown man who knew exactly what he was doing.... Whether it's a life sentence without parole (my preferred "ultimate" sentence) or death, this is about punishment, and not rehabilitation. There is no coming back from something like this...

it is likely he will not come back, if this was a religious aberration and not a personality disorder, people do undergo religious conversions, as well as losing faith altogether. Perhaps in ten years or in twenty he will undergo something like that. The life sentence should stand, though - there is plenty of good work to be done behind bars.
