just got home tonight after driving back & forth all day to see the exhibition of Hudson River School landscape paintings at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown. Just a fabulous show, with great examples of the best work of all the big 'Hudson River' names (Cole, Durand, Kensett, Cropsey, Church). It includes all five paintings making up Cole's 'Course of Empire' series, which is not my cup of tea but he thought it was his most important work.

The standout painting for me was Church's Cayambe, a mind-bogglingly beautiful large painting of a snow-capped South American mountain. The foreground tropical vegetation is so perfectly rendered in thick oil paint that it really jumps off the canvas in 3-D.

I seem to recall you live downstate- it's worth the trip to see the exhibition before it closes Sept. 27th, if you haven't seen it elsewhere.

I'm in the Hudson Valley.  It would be a trip for us but I'll have to see if we could get up there.
