  •  Well, Bankers have to pay. (5+ / 0-)

First, I agree with the central thrust, which is that corporations do compete for influence over the government. And that President Obama isn't being pushed around by the defense business. They don't care one way or the other...business will be there regardless. Big business during war...big business during peace.

But as to which industry has more influence, it should be pretty clear that the weapons, intelligence, defense and security establishments have FAR FAR more power than Wall Street. And it probably should. Because...you know...when you get down to brass tacks, in a competition between a gun and a roll of bills, gun wins. Moving money around is one thing. ICBMs are whole category more important.

And agribusiness too. Because lets face it...its the FOOD.

I remember having a conversation with a senior banker when I worked on Wall Street and he was insightful. Something along the lines of 'You know why we aren't running things? Because we're mostly Jews. Ethinc Catholics. Blacks like you. They'll let us have this around here.'

But when it comes down to the weapons and the food...the WASPs are still in control. Just like from the very beginning. Agribusiness and Defense don't need to spend a lot of money on politicians.
