  •  Not always true that "cheap and stolen pistols" (0+ / 0-)

are the weapon of choice for armed criminals.

This is just one example --- but one that some suggest became a turning point toward the militarization of police forces across America:

    North Hollywood Shootout

Botched L.A bank heist turns into bloody shootout

How the North Hollywood Shootout Changed Patrol Arsenals

The shootout gave law enforcement a compelling reason to better arm patrol officers with semi-automatic rifles.

Fifteen years ago, on Feb. 28, 1997, Los Angeles police officers engaged in one of the fiercest gun battles in modern U.S. law enforcement history. The failed bank robbery and firefight that followed during the 44 minutes from 9:17 to 10:01 a.m. would forever alter the way police agencies arm, equip, and train patrol officers.

The setting for what became known as the North Hollywood Shootout was a Bank of America branch on Laurel Canyon Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley community patrolled by the Los Angeles Police Department...

    •  There are always a few exceptions (0+ / 0-)

You can add in Platt and Matix.  They were better armed than the FBI agents (but did not have machine guns) and that shootout lead to the development of the ill-fated 10mm auto.

I never said criminals never use rifles.  I just said that they tend to prefer cheap hand guns.

use whatever weapons they can afford to buy, steal or otherwise obtain.

Let's make it harder for all criminals to get their hands on guns.

        Make sense to you?

What do we need to do?

        •  We could stop begging the question (0+ / 0-)

Is a bit cheaper in the long run to stop making criminals than developing elaborate systems to keep them from getting sharp pointy objects.

End the war on drugs.  Engage in lead paint mitigation.  Clean up Tetraethyllead.  Provide a Finnish baby box to each expectant mother.  And as the Fins also do, trust their teacheras professionals.

Crime is falling and its got nothing to do with the presence or absence of guns.

Otherwise spend some time watching Bruce Schneier's TED talk, its only ~20 minutes.  Its not about guns, its how to think about safety and security.

channel through which guns move from a legal buyer into the criminal market.

Fewer than a dozen states require require reporting lost or stolen firearms to the police.
