As Virginia AG, Cuccinelli was ultimately responsible for defending the state against a lawsuit brought by Jonnie Williams/Star Scientific disputing a $700,000 tax levy. This was before the McDonnell scandal was reported by the Washington Post.
Cucinelli held shares in the company at the time and did not recuse himself from the case--or report his share ownership, as required by law--until after the WaPost broke the story last April.
In addition, The AG's office is being investigated by the Virginia Inspector General's office. The AG's office sent emails to a Pennsylvania-based gas and oil company that happens to have been one of Cuccinelli's biggest campaign donors since 2009.
They emails appear to advise the company how best to fight a lawsuit brought by Virginia residents looking for payment of natural-gas royalties owed them under Virginia law.
Cuccinelli himself didn't write the emails, but he refuses to discuss the issue other than to say he hasn't done anything wrong.
