The vote in the House of Commons wasn't about Syria or the "special relationship" or even about the Cameron government. It was about Iraq.

Because President Bush and Prime Minister Blair so royally fucked the dog on Iraq, Americans and Britons are goddamn terrified of doing anything in Syria, even though we arguably should have stepped up to the plate back in 2011 when it was just Assad vs. poorly organized, ragtag, largely defenseless protesters. Now it's 2013 and it's Assad vs. an uneasy alliance of secular militiamen and foreign jihadists vs. a xenophobic Kurdish militancy. Lot harder to draw lines now that al-Qaeda and the PKK have stepped into the vacuum.

So now we have the unusual situation of potentially taking military action alongside France and/or Germany, countries that wisely kept out of the whole "Iraq experience", with the support of the Muslim Brotherhood, against a government that is at war with al-Qaeda. All because of the fucking pointless Iraq War.

Definitive proof is needed that Assad ordered the chemical attack, and even that might not be enough to shut Russia and China up.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.
