  •  Dear Bashar al-Assad, (5+ / 0-)

You may not have realized it yet, but you are already doomed regardless of whether the Americans decide to launch air strikes against you. Your power base is a tiny Alewite minority despised by the overwhelming Sunni majority; you have had to bring in Iranian mercenaries to maintain your hold on power; your security apparatus is controlled by your absolutely unhinged brother, who was passed over for the Assad succession because he was so reckless and unreliable; so far you have killed many tens of thousands of Syrians without defeating the revolution they are making against you; and now you're gassing your own citizens out of desperation.

The Americans don't need to dirty their hands punishing you. Syrians will never forgive you for what you've done. There is no way you can ever restore political stability to your regime. It won't be long before you too, like Qaddafi, are pulled out of a drainpipe and killed by a mob. You've made it inevitable.

      You have penned reality.

As Sheriff Heck Tate said in To Kill a Mockingbird:

Let the dead bury the dead this time, Mr. Finch. Let the dead bury the dead.
That's advice President Obama, and the entire pro-attack and pro-intervention faction in the US need to take.

      Great comment.

      •  Sounds like the French in Rwanda (0+ / 0-)

Or the whole world in Darfur.

        No, that really won't do.

And God said, "Let there be light"; and with a Big Bang, there was light. And God said "Ow! Ow My eyes!" and in a flash God separated light from darkness. "Whew! Now that's better. Now where was I. Oh yea . . ."
