  •  We're not even a Republic anymore (3+ / 0-)

An oligarchy, an aristocracy of wealth and connection rules, we have no rights they are obligated to respect, there are two systems of justice, one that lets torturers and banksters walk, another that sends 19-yea-olds to jail for 20 years for having 30 grams of pot, because that makes them "drug kingpins".

We flooded the streets for Iraq, and were told by our rulers, including our wise superior centrists, that at best we were a "focus group"; "pragmatists and centrists" (i.e., Democrats who support aggressive wars of choice even when launched by Republican presidents) told us we were "hurting our own  cause" by voicing our opposition.   So really, let the war machine roll, at least it won't be over our bodies.  We see how peaceful demonstrators are routinely treated now, we've seen how Democratic lawyers rush onto dkos to justify the Sgt Peppersprays of America, so what's the point in physical opposition at this point?  Maybe there will come a change of dynamics, of political atmosphere that will enable the (lower-case d) democratic powers of the people, but 1848 and 1989 were those years for a reason, they were the moments of ripeness.  All we can do now is hope for another such moment of readiness, and prepare ourselves for the challenges one way or the other.
