In the 1970s, before I was old enough to drive, we parked at one end of the bridge in El Paso, walked over (on my parents' drivers' licenses) and took a taxi to the dentist's office where my mom needed to go ($100 full sets of dentures, vs. $500 here in the states at the time).

I went over on my military ID once, as did my kid brother. Used to you could catch a ferry at Lajitas or walk / drive over south of Edinburg, no problem. That was then, this is now....

In the '80s we could get over with a TxDL and student ID with matching photos. The option for the 2nd set of Spanish classes' final exam was a weekend in CIudad Juarez...if you got back ok, you made an A.

Now, I wonder if a TX DL and federal-issue VA photo ID would get me back over the bridge, and I doubt it. Maybe in Progreso; probably not in Juarez. I'm not going over in Laredo.

a passport or a border crossing card that is like a mini passport.  It is the size of a drivers license but it has a chip in it. I've heard that you can still get back in with a drivers license but they will make you wait for awhile and take you to secondary to grill you and check everything out.

    •  I hitchhiked from St. Louis into Mexico (0+ / 0-)

when I was 21. We hitchhiked around Mexico. Then I came back by bus and crossed the border back into the U.S. at Laredo with just a driver's license. That was in 1969.
      Things have really changed....

While Democrats work to get more people to vote, Republicans work to ensure those votes won't count.
