  •  Can you help me understand how (0+ / 0-)
We know in advance the goal is not regime change
Why else would US intervention, which clearly seems likely to bolster the rebels over Assad, even be on the table for discussion?

I don't buy the war crimes punishment explanation being peddled in the MSM.  That's just to engender outrage among Americans who are otherwise very reluctant to put our military oar in in yet another middle eastern country's affairs.

It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. - John Steinbeck, Cannery Row

“We’re not considering any open-ended commitment. We’re not considering any boots on the ground approach,” Mr. Obama told reporters
I don't know how much more obvious he could be that we are not planning an intervention that would do what it would take to crush the Assad regime.

We are also not going to attack the chemical sites themselves, because that would be too risky for the surrounding population. It looks like it will be an attack on his air force, perhaps combined with an attack on his far more robust air defense network, if we intend to go in with ground attack a/c as well as TLAMs.

This will indeed degrade Assad's chemical warfare capability, but it will not overthrow his regime, or come anywhere close to that.
