  •  Congress have a debate? (4+ / 0-)

Please. Whether you support intervention or not the solution to this crisis is complicated. As I said before, Obama should go to Congress, knowing the current state of the Congress, they are likely to vote it down or get tangled is some kind of gridlock. This will give him cover to back out of this and fast. I mean if majority of folks are not convinced and are not ready for military intervention then why bother?

I have a feeling in the coming weeks, we will know for sure if our intellengence got it right this time.

    •  I honestly don't really doubt they got it right. (6+ / 0-)

What I doubt is that a few cruise missiles here, a few navel bombardments there, will have anything approaching a positive affect.  The area is fucked no matter what we do.  Assad stays in power?  That really sucks  - he's a really evil bastard ( and I don't use the word evil lightly anymore, I lived through Bush II).  The rebels win? That really sucks too. They're pretty bad themselves; a bunch of fundamentalist bastards that would be so happy to that the region back to the 13th century.

Whatever the best response is, it is not war; we've tried that over and over.  It costs us lives and it costs us treasure, and it has no positive effect unless you are highly placed in the MIC.  It's far past time start learning from our mistakes.  Hippocrates comes to mind at the moment:  First do no harm.

Why must we struggle to protect the accomplishments of Democrats of the past from Democrats of the present? -- cal2010

    •  Congress doesn't "debate" anything, they just (0+ / 0-)

take turns giving speeches for their predetermined stance.  When's the last time any member of Cognress was actually swayed from his/her previous position by a well articulated argument from the other side?

That said, I agree that Congress should approve of any action before it takes place, and if they don't approve, then it shouldn't take place.  But Congress won't have an actual "debate", that's laughable.
