I'm on a Mack truck forum and they're up in arms over how Volvo is discontinuing older truck parts- for example, the R model cab was used from the mid 60s through 2006, and they're already having trouble finding parts for them. A lot of Mack trucks are used in low mileage construction applications where they typically have a life of 20 years or more... But Volvo seems to think that if they cut off the parts supply you'll buy a new one.

    •  And presuming that means from them. (3+ / 0-)

There's an issue going on right now with an Android app that is somewhat similar, in a way.

There was a basic paid mind-mapping app that was very popular. It stored everything locally and people were more than willing to pay for it. Later on, the product changed to free but everything is cloud-stored, which left an interesting review history on the Google Play store from people miffed that they had paid.

I ended up on the app's store page again last night.

The company switched it from free cloud-based to pay-per-month cloud based, with little or no warning. People who paid ages ago for the initial app are now facing shelling out for a month's service just to get the data out.

That company probably thinks they're going to make a ton of money over this. What's going to happen is that people will flee to the pile of free locally stored mind mapping tools also available on the platform and avoid any app that company ever makes just in case they pull the same thing there too. If they'd stayed with the one time payment model, or even gone back to it for new users, no one would have ever had cause to give them the flood of bad reviews they're getting.

Cut the parts supply for a recent vehicle and the sales for new replacements for those owners will go elsewhere if they possibly can... and so will others in the market, because who wants to take the risk with a company known to pull that?

bet there is a business opportunity here for vintage car parts.
