For years leading up to their bankruptcy, automotive critics cautioned the domestic automakers that a downturn in the market (or a rise in gas prices) would crash the dream that the CEOs were living: dinosaurs (luxury SUVs) selling like hotcakes - maximizing profits and requiring very little investment, and no technical advancement. H*ll, just make an Eddie Bauer version. Well, guess what?

The "60 Minutes" episode in which an auto consultant haughtily explains how he simply coaches manufacturers to appeal to the buyer's reptilian brain when selling huge SUVs to every soccer mom whose primary concern is protecting their offspring, is certainly eye-opening.

It just sure is a bitch when higher order thinking kicks in.

..now, where did I leave my torches and villagers?
