  •  Interestingly, that was made into a short film ... (12+ / 0-)

..... in France by Robert Enrico - which won the Academy Award for Live Action Short Film in 1963.

And in the 5th (and final) season of The Twilight Zone, the series' last producer William Froug - who died just last week at the age of 91 - had a problem. The scripts turned in by Rod Serling and the others were costing a great deal of money, and the series was way over budget. What to do?

According to the Mark Scott Zicree's Twilight Zone Companion book, Froug had seen this short at the Cannes Film Festival, and bought the rights to broadcast it on American television (with the beginning and ending voice-overs by Rod Serling added) for  $25,000 – when their own episodes cost $65k (and up) to produce.

The series was still cancelled (it was running out of gas) but that one move at least helped end the season on budget.

You can watch at this link this film.
