  •  NFL: "concussion delivery system" (7+ / 0-)

Better than a bullet to the head!

    Or maybe not?

Michael Kaplen, a practicing brain injury lawyer who teaches at George Washington University, has labeled football a "concussion delivery system" for players.

"The settlement will have the unfortunate result of hiding from the American public all the dangers that the league has known about concussions and will allow them to perpetuate the myth that football is safe," Kaplen said.

Recently, ESPN pulled out of a project for an upcoming documentary with the PBS series Frontline titled League of Denial: The NFL's Concussion Crisis. The NFL said it did not pressure ESPN, and the network said its decision was based on "editorial control" of its concussion coverage.

    •  That's why I don't like contact sports (3+ / 0-)

I can't stand watching them, because I know people are getting hurt, deliberately.

Basketball, swimming, gymnastics, perhaps soccer are much better. I don't winch nearly as much.

      •  Fortunately, when you watch an NFL game (3+ / 0-)

there is very little actual activity happening during most of those 3 hours.  I mean, 3 hours to televise 60 minutes of you already have 2 hours of commercials.  Then, the clock is often running when there is no actual you probably only get 25-35 minutes of actual play in 3 hours.

That's why, even as a sports fan, I can only bring myself to watch NFL football if the weather is horrible or if I'm with other people who are watching...otherwise, it's a complete waste of a perfectly good Sunday afternoon.

but all contact sports carry significant risk for brain injury, beyond what most people know or imagine.

Basketball, hockey and soccer all produce a high number of concussions; and especially among young girls. Cheerleading "accidents" (falls) can also result in nasty concussions, sometimes with lasting or even lifelong consequences.

What we are beginning to understand about brain injury among football players is truly just a glimpse of the overall magnitude of how dangerous it is to ever hit your head.
