I'll never understand this "rah rah Go MY STATE!" nonsense.  I'm in Michigan but it's not like I conciously chose to be born here.  The state is overpopulated with racist bigots and redneck assholes, as I'm quick to point out when appropriate.  If someone else points it out,  I don't take it personally, because I know that I'm not a racist bigot or a redneck asshole.  I don't freak out and assume they think that every single person in the state is an asshole.  But then, it's just the state I happen to live in, and I have other ways of identifying myself.

It was similar when Dubya was presidentin over a warmongering nation.   When foreigners pointed out the USA's warmongering, I agreed with them.  I did not puff myself up in indignation and accuse the foreigners of hatin' on my country because my country is above criticism.

I've got an uncle who's the same way about the Detroit Lions.  Make fun of them while they're on TV getting their asses handed to them, and the guy takes it as a personal insult.  Last time I saw him he was stewing over an incident that occured two weeks prior where someone laughed at the Lions.  It's good when this sort of nationalism is channeled into mostly harmless things like sports teams, but still...WTF?

    •  Missouri ain't really my state. . . (0+ / 0-)

and I don't really say "y'all." I do expect more from Kossacks than perhaps I should. I criticize Missouri all the time; but I didn't like it when folks here dumped on Wisconsinites, and talk of bombing or blockading a state hits me. . . wrong. I'm happy to have the feds come in here and enforce federal law on this insane, seditious legislature. Just don't like seeing  progressives in red states viewed as collateral damage by SOME, obviously not a majority, of commenters here. And it's good to know I'm not alone in my sentiments.
