must vote yes.  I disagree w/ almost everything you write except that Obama did the right thing.

My best guess was a reflection that did not look back, an image lost in every mirror.

    •  You've learned nothing from hte past decadee (14+ / 0-)

A sitting Democratic president doesn't make the drums of war and aggression okay. Syria is not an existential threat nor is the picture as clear as you seem to pretend that it is.

    •  We won't know for sure (5+ / 0-)

until after a vote is taken.  It's too early to know.

If Congress votes "no" on attacking (invading) Syria and Obama disregards their vote by invading anyway, then he doesn't deserve praise.

If he doesn't honor the wishes of Congress, he doesn't deserve praise.

    •  How can a Democrat support military action? (7+ / 0-)

Please explain how you support military action here after Iraq and Afghanistan?

        •  Not a politician, I meant a party member (1+ / 0-)

It seems antithetical to my view of the inclusive and humanist platform that draws most people to the Democratic Party. That's all. As citizens. Politicians are, by definition, in a position to occasionally have to be hawkish since they are responsible for national defense. Thus said, those of us who just vote and go about our lives don't have to support the same kinds of military actions and so on, and I would go further to just say that human rights are probably more pressing for most who are attracted to the Party. I think that's right, at any rate. And yes, obviously, this issue is complex regarding human rights. But I really, strongly agree with what this diary posits. I cannot ever support war. It doesn't sit with me. I can imagine supporting it only in the most limited circumstances, and even then, it would be an ethical problem.

I'm also a staunch pacifist. Always have been.

      •  this isn't Iraq or Afghanistan (1+ / 0-)

I don't know what Obama is thinking - I guess some "limited" air raid that may well have little effect.

In Iraq - there was no war till we got there with 150K troops. In Syria there is a war and AFAIK no US troops are being proposed.

In Afghanistan - Again we sent tens of thousands of troops and supposedly are trying to remake the country as some kind of democracy. Is any of this on the table for Syria? My understanding is the point is to stop chemical weapons use, not ally with one of the sides or nation-building.

        It's a different story.

I am still skeptical about proposed US involvement.
