My policy is not to buy e-books unless they are cheap, because when you're through with one you can't hand it to a friend or sell it to a used-book store. It feels a lot like leasing a car: you pay for it and end up with nothing.

So Billy Lynn had been on my wish list on Amazon for a while. When I got one of those emails offering it for $1.99, I sprang.

I wanted and expected so badly to love this book, and at first I did. Then I began to notice that the Thanksgiving he and Bravo unit were spending with the Dallas Cowboys would have had to take, without the Ayn Randian expansion of time that apparently happened, at least a week. That's a week of cocktail-party-type conversations, with Billy's unvoiced commentary adding piquancy. It was enjoyable as all get-out until I noticed it wasn't, you know, ending.

Plus a few confusing details: Billy's sergeant can smell the whiskey on his breath after a cooperative bartender put some in his Coke, but the time he and a couple other dudes spent in a tiny room smoking a joint was without consequence.

I'm more than halfway through, at the part where Billy has decided many of the Cowboys are downright weird, and his sergeant agrees, and I'm starting to do some serious skimming....

Maybe this is a rewrite of The Endless Story.
