    In Syria, it does apply to an extent, since the cultural ties between France and Syria and Lebanon do exist.  But France is not necessarily coming down on the side of the Alawite Regime, though, is it?

    In Libya, it was, in a sense, a reaction to having made a wrong call in Tunisia, when they stood behind Ben-Ali as the Arab Spring was beginning and really embarrassed themselves.

    In Mali, it did, indeed, have to do with old colonial ties.

    That being said, the French also view themselves as the original and oldest modern democracy in the world and having a special responsibility to fight for Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité.

    BTW, the whole theory that this is a case of "Islamists vs. Assad" is overly simplistic an untrue.
