    ....was also something of a half-hidden disaster, in that Miyazaki basically made up the spirit world he used in that story, rather than adopting or adapting that of the aboriginal people of northern Japan, the Ainu. I saw the film in Japan with some Ainu friends shortly after it came out, and they were very upset about the way they and the other residents of northern Japan had been slighted. Of course, Miyazaki isn't the only Japanese person to forget that the Ainu even exist, but they had expected more of him. The depiction of northern Japanese life, customs, and history in the movie has about as much relation to reality as a cigar-store Indian has to a real aboriginal American.
