  •  how secret briefing can manipulate Congress (8+ / 0-)

September 1, 2013. We hear that Congressional Representatives and Senators are being called back to be briefed before the next session starts when they will have to decide whether to support an attack on Syria. I shudder when I think about this whole process because I remember that just before the invasion of Iraq, a few peace activists found out where one of our U.S. Senators was speaking and we started talking to her about the pending invasion. She said over and over “If you knew what I knew, you would support the invasion.” She could not tell us what she knew. About three years later, I was again able to talk to this Senator, and she more or less said, that she was given a top secret briefing before the invasion of Iraq full of false intelligence. She knew those three years later that she had been lied to and taken advantage of. How do we know what the U.S. Congress will be told in strict confidence that they cannot divulge and even refer to in their debates? I am sorry but the whole legitimacy of the National Security State has been compromised.
