  •  one foothold & one handhold and you can't fall :) (11+ / 0-)

That biofilm on rocks is really slippery!  I have used the third point of contact method as well.

My uncle always told me that if I had one good foothold and one good handhold that I couldn't fall.  I took a lot of comfort in that while climbing vertical silo chutes, ladders, and working on roofs, etc.  That is until my new wife (44 years ago) explained the obvious fallacy of that logic.  If you fall, then by definition either the foothold or handhold was not good.

It is sunny and cool here in the thumb of Michigan, going up to 72 F and some probability of rain tomorrow for our end-of-summer party.  It went down to 41 F this AM, but the low for Saturday night is a much warmer 63 F for the campers.

    •  Is a low of 41 typical for early September, (6+ / 0-)

for your part of Michigan, Dr. Arcadia?  I'd be worried that would send a bad sign to the tomatoes, telling them it was too late to ripen, so don't try.

      •  41 F is not a record low for sure (6+ / 0-)

The average date of first frost here is supposed to be Oct 10th, but my experience suggests Oct 4th.  I can remember Sept 15th for a first frost.

We once "camped" at my brother's place in Reed City, Michigan (west, but not far north of here) on Sept 20th and the temperature dropped to 20 F.  The kids (and a few unnamed adults) had fun "sledding" on the frost covered hill behind their house until the sun reached it about noon.
