A meta thought about the NSA's vacuuming of everything they can lay their hands on.

First of all, this not meant to be an attempt to validate what they've done, but to try to understand the rationale for it.

Spies have always operated with imperfect information. They never knew everything that was going on around them.

Suddenly society changed in a way that offered to them on a silver plate access to communications, patterns of money and people movement and other information in forms that I can't even think of.

Is it any surprise that they'd try to utilize it all? I agree that they've gone far beyond any previous conception of what's legal and what's not.

I'm not going to condemn them out of hand for grabbing what they thought was useful. But what they grab and how they do it does need a rethinking.
