Happy Friday, all.  Well... it's Friday, at least, and thank the FSM for that!  I had a rough end-of-week at work.

I've read about a defined, alternative route for that natural gas pipeline, but it would have to go through Kurdish territory in Iraq.  TPB have apparently decided to sacrifice the Syrians, instead.  Interestingly, Jordan will benefit either way, so I wonder if that's why we've plopped 700 troops there....

It seems to me, there's a huge struggle going on for world dominance.  China's been relatively quiet, but there's a lot of contentiousness surfacing between the U.S. and Russia. I've learned that the cybercrime committee (Estonia, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, UK, USA - gee, wonder who holds the power there) has proposed an additional protocol to further relax transborder access to data and Russia was vociferous in its opposition there, too:

But the really notable exception was Russia, taking the floor at numerous occasions and strongly advocating against the proposal with arguments based both on international law and on privacy and personal data protection.
Russia is the lone member of the Council of Europe that isn't a signatory.  It keeps finding itself as an outsider, or is positioning itself that way...

and a happy friday to you!  today work was similarly rough for me, our network was running slow and dropping packets with an irritating frequency, which makes my work difficult at best.  oh well, i guess there's always next week.

the guardian has a fairly comprehensive article about the pipeline politics here that is well worth a gander.

it looks to me like we are seeing the reinvigoration of superpower politics, with the rise of russia and to a lesser degree lately, china.

putin and his pals are doing a great job with the pr of late, casting themselves as the better superpower.  obama has been doing a great job of making the us appear as a rampant villain eager to dominate allies and foes alike through stealthy means and rain terror on lesser states that fail to cooperate with the empire's demands.

i expect any day now for putin or some other head of state label the us as "the evil empire," to the nodding of heads around the world.

for the happy friday wishes and especially for the Guardian article.  The pipeline politics are fascinating to me and I'll be sure to take a gander.

I agree with your assessment of Putin's pr efforts.  The man keeps positioning himself on the high road without drawing attention to the fact that he has an agenda, too.  Obama's making the "compare and contrast" exceptionally easy for Putin.

I hope your weekend is relaxing and enjoyable, joe.
