When you talk special interest groups in the Middle East religion probably tops the list. In Russia Orthodox Christian religious groups are one of the "thems" driving Russian policy just as Jews in the US tend to be concerned about Israel and Shia in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and Iran tend to be concerned about Sunni plutocracy's and military juntas while the Sunni plutocracy's in Saudi Arabia which include the Royal Family and ARAMCO are also concerned about their oil interests.

Farming interests in the Middle East are just as concerned about water and aquifers and fracking as we are in our western states. Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria share watersheds over which bloody battles have been fought going back to the 18th Dynasty of Egypt.

In many cases the "little people" tend to be networked into communities of religious, business, and cultural "trading houses" which have unbelievable clout in the middle east. As the community "elders"leading discussions at the mosques, churches, temples the business leaders are counterparts to the mullahs, priests, rabbi's; and for that matter the al Qaeda groups funding the rebels.

Their connections are international with linkages going all the way to Russia and China that have histories going back 4000 years.
