i remember stopping one night at the san mateo public library and seeing two dumpsters FILLED with books - they had to make room for the new 50 copies of each jackie suzanne novel they were "renting" out.

the same with the burlingame library where i asked what they were doing with old encylopedia sets.  dumping them, they said.  i asked how one EVER would find the old maps of europe or africa or compare the changes in science, develpments in psychology through the years and decades and centuries!  same response.  more room needed for their "rental" library of new best sellers that the 1% were too damned cheap to buy outright!

we are in trouble.  when these written tomes go - when the microfish is no more - we are throwing away our store of knowledge.

no wonder ignorance is gaining headway every day!

diving that day along with others who tried to pull what we could to salvage and give away.

it is criminal when knowledge is thrown away.

oh, that san mateo library actually banned me for a month.  why? because i objected to this really scuzzy man who was viewing pornography - graphic pornography - on the computers then trying to chat up two very young girls who were leaving (like 11 and 12).

the librarian hautily told me that they couldn't prevent him from viewing what he wanted because it was the LIBRARY - so i asked them if they had the latest copies of porn videos on the shelves.

their answer? they banned ME for stirring up trouble!

      creeps!

....that we are living in 'the cultural end times'. The Walmartization of the land - the flood of reality TV - the closure of libraries - they all feel like parts of the same tragic 'National Quilt' that is being sewn.

(in selected subjects) as I can afford. I am a truly voracious reader.....for example, I read medical journals (peer-reviewed) for fun! I know, I know - truly sad....

We are in an age when TV anchors and others misuse polysyllabic words regularly (if they use them at all), and they ALL have the ability to 'verb every noun, and noun every verb'.

If I hear 'most awarded SUV' in a commercial once more I shall SCREAM....unless the person concerned actually means 'the SUV that has been given away most times as a prize', that is!

I'm not a pedant - I just abhor the degradation of the language of Shakespeare and Milton and Thoreau

i've stopped watching teevee news because i cannot STAND to hear the illiterate ramblings of the talking heads, the news readers reading words that are misused, mispronounced, or just plain incorrect.

and if i hear "alleged" used one more time (as in "alleged victim"), i'm going to hurl a shoe at the screen!

we are a nation of undereducated idiots thanks to the efforts of the republicans to strip away public education!

the only thing that might save us is if there is a long term power outage where people realize what they are losing - if it's not too late already!
