  •  Dune + Lawrence in Arabia (21+ / 0-)

Frank Herbert's classic isn't holding up so well on this read-through. It's still a classic and he was probably doing something quite innovative for his time, but on this reading all I can see are the holes. The book is still working well as a bedtime/shut-the-brain-down diversion, though.

I'm also working my way through Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly, and the Making of the Modern Middle East by Scott Anderson. It's a fascinating read. I'm not especially familiar with the history of WWI, though, so in addition to learning a lot about a handful of key individuals, I'm also learning things about the larger conflict I'd just never encountered in any detail. It's an eye-opener.

    •  interesting. I have never re-read Dune, but teh (3+ / 0-)

      DH has.

He has a VERY strong opinion that none of the sequels work because Herbert really didn't have any idea what he was doing with Dune, so of course when he tried to continue with other story threads he would concentrate on things that didn't actually fit or make much sense...

      what specific holes, for example???

"real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...
