    My understanding that all these benefits require people to pay higher taxes.  The European electorate seem to find the  results are worth it. Some people think they have to give up human rights and individuality in those nations.  But they seem to be about as innovative as us, and certainly, on average, better educated.

    But isn't that the fundamental difference between red and blue voters?  The red voters believe (rightly or wrongly) that they would be better off with lower taxes, less regulation, and less public benefits.  The blue voters believe that collective action is needed to prevent being wage slaves to those highly skilled either at amassing riches or in inheriting wealth.
