  •  there were a lot of press reports at the time (5+ / 0-)

that the Anthrax had been "weaponized" and perhaps even "microencapsulated"---actually it hadn't been. It was a strain of Anthrax developed by the US for use in making vaccines.

That was the department that Ivins was in charge of, and he had sole control over who had access to that particular strain of Anthrax. It could ONLY have come from him or from someone he gave it to.

What is absolutely certain, though, is that the 9-11 Anthrax didn't come out of any cave in Afghanistan, as the wingnuts and the press were screeching at the time.

    •  I'd rec this, but it's too late. (0+ / 0-)

I never thought it was anyone in Afghanistan, though a big deal was made back in the day of the Russian bioweapons lab in the middle of the rapidly drying Aral Sea, I think by the Soviet defector Alibek, so at a stretch, some anthrax from there could have gotten loose on the landscape. It did seem far-fetched and much more likely that some bent person took the opportunity to sow more fear in the general populace. Funny he only sent it to (left wing?) media and Democrats though.

not believe anything Alibek said (and I was skeptical myself at the time).  But it was all later confirmed by the Russian government after the USSR collapsed. The Soviet Union did indeed have a large amount of biological agents--which was probably illegal under the BW Convention.
