Quit my job to escape a harassing boss who was sure to fuck me over during my 3rd year review. I was lucky enough to find something else but that doesn't always happen. And unfortunately at the institution I was at, joining a union wasn't permitted. We desperately need some sort of workplace reforms, now.

I left a position with a daily newspaper in 1990 after getting verbal abuse from my sports editor.  When he arrived, I was re-assigned from covering games to being "chained" to a desk, reading copy.  This came after 10 years in the business.

I was asked, a week before Christmas 1989, to resign.  I refused, but two months later, even though it killed my daily career, I could not take it when he questioned my work, which I believed was good, and resigned.  BTW, I heard the guy was fired six months later.

I did six years as a substitute teacher and youth counselor before I moved to community newspapers ... until my Bush-loving, clueless publisher (obviously didn't remember much from the Harvard Business School on how to run a business) fired me ("laid off" is a silly euphemism; how many actually get called back?) last year after 13 1/2 years with the company.

I remain unemployed today, even after sending resumes to about 200 companies and having a dozen job interviews.

Don't wait until 2014 ... begin voting out the trash in November!
