    As a self-employed person that year than you thought you would, don't you have to pay back part of the subsidy?

    That's how SSI works. If at the end of the year when you file your taxes it ends up you earned more than the previous year, and they overpaid you, you have to pay it back. It can be quite painful, especially if the year you have to pay it back in isn't as good a year.

    They just don't know how to deal with the self-employed with variable incomes very well. I don't know how to fix that.
