issuing any recommendations of anything very wide sweeping, legislatively speaking. It is sticking to a very narrow framework and staying away from addressing the big changes that could make a difference.

    •  Do you see that the purpose was to identify (5+ / 0-)

      how to prioritize research funds?

The report is very dry, in the language the scientists use to describe correlations that need further study. "There is a correlation by cause and effect is not clear." Is that what you mean by weak tea?

In the age of austerity all research budgets have been cut. I'd like to see more research re alcohol/guns and fatigue/guns. We know know re driving that drowsy driving is as bad as driving drunk, but it took decades or research and public education to implement change.

don't tackle topics that have the possibility of being very political (e.g., preterm delivery, etc.) so this one is kind of unusual. I work in the field so I understand how an epidemiologic literature review would be expected to couch things (so no, that is not what I meant by weak tea), but it appears to have been a missed opportunity (although again without a close reading at this point). Yes I would like to see lots more research on a variety of aspects, but I feel like there is a significant hole here, which might be due to who was on the panel. The public health approach does not demand that alternative (macro level) preventive measures could not be included; CDC recommendations on fluoridation of water are an example.

        But it's better than nothing.

when you have had time to dig into it. My background is chemistry so all of this is really "soft science" to me.

is when kids are dying and major government enterprises spend their time identifying how to prioritize research funds.
