    It looks to me like many cycles ago the security state became the enemy, and has spent many cycles inventing or exaggerating enemies so it could remain the top predator.

    They became the enemy because FDR, Truman and Eisenhower gave the OSI/CIA and other spy agencies unlimited powers and no accountability to the Constitution beyond some PR expenses. And over the generations the people never did anything about it, though we had plenty of chances and obvious reasons since the beginning.
