Netanyahu's constant beating of the war drums over Iran is key to his political control in Israel and most of the US political and media class buy this line without questioning it in the slightest.

But, despite the paranoia fanned by Netanyahu and his party, Israel faces no serious threats from any of its neighbors. Of course, there is a constant risk of small scale terrorist attacks or crude rocket launchings but there is simply no existential threat to Israel.  The country is prosperous, the Palestinians have been rendered powerless, and the Israeli Defense Force can deal easily with any future threats like the 1973 Yom Kippur invasion. And the huge nuclear deterrent would prevent any threat from even a nuclear-armed Iran.

Even so, Israelis cannot be blamed for being what those in other cultures might call paranoid. The Holocaust cannot nor should not be discounted as a one-time aberration. Anti-Semitism is a constant in the Islamic and Christian world and could easily mushroom into another genocidal frenzy.

This is why Israel has built such a powerful armed force. And this why, despite Lindsey Graham's attempts to do a Carolina impersonation of Netanyahu, Israel really is in no danger.
