  •  what, articles on something else than NSA & Syria (18+ / 0-)

are these articles saying the economy is something to pay attention to?

since June there has been too much time on NSA which takes away the wind in the sales of the political class

now that the war possibility is on the table, the politicians have lots to say and lots of time on TV

but the empire needs war to continue on its path

hence there is a connection between war, security and the economy. Here is something about our empire and wars.

Chalmers Johnson wrote a trilogy about our foreign policy of military bases around the world. This is from wiki

He wrote numerous books including, most recently, three examinations of the consequences of American Empire: Blowback, The Sorrows of Empire, and Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic. A former cold warrior, his fears for the US changed:
"A nation can be one or the other, a democracy or an imperialist, but it can’t be both. If it sticks to imperialism, it will, like the old Roman Republic, on which so much of our system was modeled, like the old Roman Republic, it will lose its democracy to a domestic dictatorship."
I added the bold to make the point about the declining empire.

from the social historian Morris Berman

Because the historical record is that no empire that has entered its twilight phase stops, takes stock of what it is doing, and then attempts to reverse its trajectory. In fact, as students of civilization such as Arnold Toynbee have pointed out, the usual pattern is to pursue precisely those actions that will accelerate the decline. In this regard, the U.S. has been depressingly exemplary.
    I added the bold.

Income inequality is just one of the many ways of hastening the decline of empire.

The quotation is from Morris Berman's preface to the Mandrin translation of his 2011 book "Why America Failed"
