Before Obama was elected, filibusters were rare--even the "silent filibusters" where the Senate took a cloture vote and if there weren't 60 votes, moved to a different subject weren't common. Also, the Republicans accused the Democrats of being obstructionists for filibustering 7 partisan hacks and ideological extremists that then-President Bush nominated to the Federal bench; and sank Tom Daschle's (D-SD) Senate career because of that.

Once Obama gets in, the Republicans filibuster everything they can; and the conventionally wise treat it as though there had been a secret Constitutional Amendment raising the number of votes needed to get anything through the Senate to 60.

If Obama had been assured of getting a straight up or down vote on the stimulus bill, clearly more people would have returned to work. When someone uses the 60 Vote business to justify the weakness of the recovery, we should ask, "Why you are trying to protect the Republicans?"

The furor over Friday's [10.5] job report revealed a political movement that is rooting for American failure, so obsessed with taking down Obama that good news drives its members into a blind rage. -Paul Krugman

Hawkeye Pierce (Alan Alda) was searching for a piece of equiptment (I think it was an autoclave) and finds one officer who has 3. That officer won't give up any--or even use them-- because then he's have 2.

The Democratic "leadership's" obsession about keeping the powder dry similarly ignores the reason for having the powder in the first place.
