I have a friend whose search for an affordable place to live just ended. She knew the house they'd "owned" was going to be foreclosed on and started looking beforehand, but she didn't know the search would last a year and a half.

At some point during this whole thing, her husband was talking to the "owner" of a modest place whose rent was in the stratosphere. The guy admitted that he'd "only bought it to gouge the frack guys." And that as soon as they were gone he was going to walk away and abandon the house.

That's always been a problem around here - absentee landlords who don't maintain their rentals and let them rot away or get torched. I have a feeling though that we ain't seen nuthin' yet.
