  •  His words (0+ / 0-)

were that he knew about some of the camps, but had no idea of the colossal scale of it. That's actually pretty consistent with what most people of the era said -- it seemed the Final Solution was not made public knowledge to many.

And because he had a personal relationship with Hitler, he was never able to reconcile the man who by all accounts was very kind to those close to him with these unthinkable horrors.

It seems very human to me, really. Maybe I'm terribly soft but I find it hard to not feel any sympathy for the man.

    •  He wasn't just a guy living in Berlin (0+ / 0-)

I find it very difficult to believe that he didn't know more about the Holocaust then he let on.

And other reports suggest that you can take the Nazi out of a bunker but he's still a Nazi:

On neo-Nazis: “Ach, neo-Nazi. [There is] no such thing. What does ‘neo-Nazi’ mean? New Nazi, right? There aren’t any. That’s just a buzzword. What you have are nationally conscious people, people who say, ‘my fatherland, right or wrong.’ My fatherland, nothing more, am I right? [The] British say it, the Swiss say it, the Israelis say it -- ‘My country,’ they say. And I’ll fight for it. The Israelis are nationalistic people, they defend their region, they defend their people. They have as much right as anyone.”

Maybe he was more nuanced in his views, but I'm not seeing anything other than someone who didn't want to accept or acknowledge his part in a very dark chapter - and who would have been fine if Germany slid back to that place.

Don't get me wrong; your charitable view is commendable and I think we (collectively) wish/hope that we would have acted differently than so many like Herr Misch had we been in his place but I'm not always so sure.
